Why is it important to check your liver?

Liver cancer is the third leading cancer killer in Hong Kong, after lung cancer and colorectal cancer, with about 1,800 new cases and about 1,500 deaths each year.

The liver is an organ that does not express pain, and even if a tumor grows, it will not be felt until fatty liver, cirrhosis, or even liver cancer, so the golden opportunity for treatment is missed.

The liver has many important functions, and in case something goes wrong with the liver, it can have serious effects on the body. Symptoms are not noticeable when liver problems occur in the early stages, so regular liver function tests can ensure liver health.

What is a liver function test?

Liver function tests are blood tests that measure the amount of protein, liver enzymes and bilirubin in the blood to assess liver or biliary tract function and detect liver infection, damage or inflammation.

Regular liver function tests are recommended if you have any of the following lifestyle habits or diseases:

Long-term drinking, even binge drinking

Have liver disease, such as hepatitis B

Have a family history of liver disease

Being overweight, especially if you have diabetes or high blood pressure

Have gallbladder disease or anemia

Are taking medications that are or may cause liver damage

Symptoms of liver disease, such as yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), abdominal pain, bloating, dark urine or light-colored stools
