The first line of defense against cervical cancer
Cervical cancer is one of the top 10 cancers in women in Hong Kong, and about 70% of cervical cancers are caused by infection with human neoplasia virus (HPV) of genotypes 16 and 18. The HPV virus can remain dormant in the human body for a long time without obvious symptoms, but if it is not treated in time, it may cause abnormal changes in cells and deteriorate into cervical cancer.
HPV DNA testing is a new method of cervical cancer screening. Compared to a traditional Pap smear (Pap smear test), HPV DNA testing can detect health risks earlier, buying time for patients to receive treatment before their condition worsens. The World Health Organization (WHO) updated its guidelines in July 2021 recommended that HPV DNA testing should be used globally as the preferred strategy for cervical cancer screening.

HPV DNA testing and Pap smears are both important ways to detect and prevent cervical cancer.
Pap smears are used to check for abnormal cells. However, it can take years from infection with the HPV virus to the time the virus causes precancerous changes and cancer. Therefore, compared with Pap smear, HPV DNA testing can warn of the risk of cervical cancer earlier and more effectively and eliminate the hidden danger of cancer.
The Hong Kong Department of Health recommends regular cervical cancer screening for adult sexually experienced women:
- Women aged 25 to 29 years: Pap smears every 3 years.
- Women ages 30 to 64: HPV DNA test every 5 years, or Pap smear test every 3 years, or Pap smear test and HPV DNA test every 5 years (called pooled testing).

HPV vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer, but HPV does not protect against all genotypes of HPV, so regular cervical cancer screening is still necessary.

HPV DNA test?
It is not necessary to get tested for HPV virus before vaccination, which aims to detect HPV infection as early as possible, while vaccination aims to prevent genotypes that have not been infected. However, for those who have sexual experience, getting tested can identify the infection status early, assess the risk of cancer, and combine it with vaccination to prevent cancer more effectively.
